Man faces gun, drug charges after arrest in Bloomingdale
A man facing drug and gun charges told police that the 558 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms in his car Saturday were for “his spiritual journey,” DuPage County prosecutors allege.
Hector Borias, 36, of the 4600 block of West Barry Avenue in Chicago, is charged with armed violence, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of cannabis by a driver and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. All are felonies.
According to a prosecutor’s petition for pretrial detention, Bloomingdale police said they found the mushrooms in 65 small plastic bags, as well as a larger plastic bag and a glass jar, in Borias’ vehicle Saturday.
Police had stopped him on Lake Street because he changed lanes improperly, according to the petition. Officers said they searched the vehicle after seeing marijuana inside it.
According to the petition, police found a bag of cannabis on the floor, and a loaded Sig Sauer 9mm pistol, seven Adderall pills, two Xanax pills and one hydrocodone pill in a backpack. A cooler found in the vehicle contained the mushrooms and 15 Ecstasy pills, authorities allege.
Prosecutors say said Borias was convicted of armed violence and manufacture/delivery of heroin in a 2012 Cook County case and sentenced to eight years in prison.
Judge Anthony Coco ordered that Borias remain in custody while his case is pending.
