City: Police department not associated with union fundraiser

The Wheaton Police Department is not associated with fundraising activities for the Metropolitan Alliance of Police union, the city said in a notice Monday.

The city informed residents that Viking Promotions will be conducting the fundraising drive on behalf of the union. Though Wheaton officers are represented by a MAP chapter, the fundraiser is not associated with the city or the police department, according to the notice.

Similar fundraising efforts have previously sparked inquiries about potential fraudulent calls or whether the police department is seeking donations. The department, however, does not contact people by phone to solicit funds.

The city advises those who are unsure of a caller’s legitimacy to contact the department’s non-emergency number at (630) 260-2161.
