Grown-up namesake of GiGi’s Playhouse embarks on national speaking tour in native suburbs
South Barrington’s GiGi Gianni, namesake and Chief Inspiration Officer of Hoffman Estates-based GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers, will kick off a national speaking tour this Sunday in Wilmette.
Having addressed the United Nations in New York earlier this year about the value of every life, the “Born to be Heard” tour is intended to take the same message to communities across the country.
A limited number of free tickets are still available for the launch event from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Michigan Shores Country Club, 911 Michigan Ave. in Wilmette.
“I know not everyone sees my life as valuable,” GiGi Gianni said in a statement. “But I’m here to tell the truth: My life has value and so do the lives of all people with disabilities.”
Nancy Gianni, GiGi’s mother and the founder of GiGi’s Playhouse, described the “Born to be Heard” tour as a natural extension of the organization’s mission.
“GiGi has spent her whole life showing the world that every life has value,” she said. “This tour takes that message beyond our Playhouses and into the hearts of people everywhere.”
For more than 20 years, GiGi Gianni has been the face of an effort to redefine what’s possible for individuals with Down syndrome. Her personal story has led to a worldwide movement.
Starting from a single Playhouse founded in her honor, that effort has grown into a network of 62 achievement centers as well as virtual programs that can now reach families in more than 95 countries.
The tour specifically supports the GiGi’s Voice capital campaign to help people with Down syndrome build communication skills, confidence and connection.
Donations and partnerships generated by the tour will directly fund free programs at GiGi’s Playhouse like the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program, LMNOP early communication program and one-on-one literacy tutoring.
Pre-registration for Sunday’s event is required by visiting gigisplayhouse.org. Cocktail attire is suggested for attendees.
