Mount Prospect voting on its share for Busse Road reconstruction

Mount Prospect trustees are expected to vote Tuesday on an intergovernmental agreement with Cook County to help pay for the long-planned reconstruction of Busse Road between Central and Golf roads.

The project will transform the aging two-lane roadway into a three-lane cross-section with such improvements as curb and gutter, an enclosed storm sewer system, a sidewalk on the west side, a shared-use path on the east side and upgraded traffic signals.

The new design includes a center lane that can accommodate turns, addressing the road’s major traffic flow problems.

“The backups that are there basically are almost always having to do with people turning into driveways or onto side streets where it just backs up traffic,” village Public Works Director Sean Dorsey said.

The three-lane solution was one of two alternatives presented at a public meeting. Residents preferred that over a four-lane solution.

The 1.25-mile stretch of Busse Road, which is under the jurisdiction of Cook County, was last resurfaced more than 25 years ago and is showing significant signs of deterioration. Currently, the roadway has a rural profile with open ditches and only partial sidewalk coverage.

Drivers turning from Central Road onto Busse should be familiar with its current condition, getting a bumpy ride as they proceed south.

The project’s construction and engineering costs are estimated at $18.9 million. The village is responsible for $408,748.

The village received a $1.45 million Illinois Transportation Enhancement Project grant that will cover 80% of project costs for sidewalk, shared-use path, traffic signal and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon work, as well as 50% of street lighting work.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026 and be completed in 2027.
