Maine Township Highway Department begins work on ‘Connecting Communities’ project

The Maine Township Highway Department officially began work on the planned Church Street Sidewalk and Bike Lane Project recently through an “Invest in Cook” grant from the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways.

Specifically, Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways granted the Highway Department’s request of $425,000 for construction to support the project which aims to connect the communities of Des Plaines, Park Ridge, and Niles in unincorporated Maine Township.

The project, spearheaded by Highway Commissioner Ed Beauvais, was identified by the county as being in alignment with Connecting Cook County, their Long-Range Transportation Plan.

“We’re thrilled to finally begin work on this exciting project,” Beauvais said. “We are now moving full steam ahead on this community connectivity project which will enhance the lives of all Maine Township residents.”

Throughout the last year, the Township Highway Department entered into multiple intergovernmental agreements with the connected towns to facilitate the construction of this project and move it toward construction and completion.

“This is a key milestone for the advancement of this project. We estimate completion in Spring 2026,” Beauvais said.

Maine Township’s unincorporated area is one of the largest unincorporated areas in the entire state. The Maine Township Highway Department maintains 21.8 miles of roadway, 100 streets and untold numbers of sewers and sidewalks throughout unincorporated Maine Township.
