Wheaton man detained pretrial on gun charges
A Wheaton man is being held at the DuPage County jail on charges that he illegally possessed guns.
Jermaine S. Morris Jr., 24, of the 900 block of South Lorraine Road, is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and possession of burglary tools.
Morris was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 14.
According to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Maywood police responded at 3:09 a.m. Oct. 3 to a call about a stolen vehicle in the 1200 block of Bataan Street in Maywood.
The Dodge Charger was located about 10 blocks away, and a towing company had been hired to tow it to the 1000 block of South Lorraine in Wheaton. According to the prosecutors’ petition to detain Morris, the phone number of the person who had called for the tow was the same as Morris’s number.
Police suspected Morris and obtained a search warrant for his house.
During the search Tuesday, police say they found a stolen Ruger 22 Charger rifle with a drum ammunition magazine, a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun, a Polymer80 gun kit, 13 cellphones, five ghost key fobs and one programmer. The guns were found underneath clothes in a laundry basket in a bathroom, and beneath the top sheet of Morris’ grandmother’s bed, according to the petition.
The next court date for Morris is Nov. 3.
