Bicyclist critically injured in crash near Cary

A man riding a bike near Cary was flown to the hospital by helicopter late Tuesday after a crash left him critically injured, officials said.

The Cary Fire Protection District was called at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday to the 6500 block of Silver Lake Road near Cary, where they found the man in the road who had collided with a small sedan, according to spokesperson Alex Vucha.

While the sedan driver was not hurt, the bicyclist suffered critical injuries, Vucha said, and first responders immediately started life-saving measures.

A medical helicopter landed at Mercyhealth Crystal Lake Hospital and took the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Silver Lake Road was closed in both directions after the crash to allow first responders to work safely and to accommodate an investigation, Vucha said.

The McHenry County sheriff’s office is handling the investigation.
