Buffalo Grove, Hoffman Estates, Lakes, Schaumburg and Wauconda among Friday’s football winners
Matthew Kaput was working for the weekend Friday in Deerfield.
The junior carried the ball 37 times and gained 278 yards and scored four touchdowns as Buffalo Grove knocked off host Deerfield 27-24 Friday.
Kaput had touchdown runs of 1, 15, 12 and 76 yards as the Bison (1-2) built a 27-10 lead. In addition, Kaput caught 2 passes for 65 yards. He also had 2 solo tackles and 6 assists.
Deerfield closed to 27-24 with 6:31 left to play.
The Bison first burned off 3:48 of that time before Deerfield got the ball back with 2:43 left. It took just one play to end the Warriors threat when Richie Mele intercepted a pass just nine seconds later and the Bison ran out the clock from there.
Hoffman Estates 28, New Trier 21:
The Hawks (3-0) scored three touchdowns in the final quarter to erase a 21-7 deficit and remain unbeaten. Quan Fields score on a 1-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds remaining to give Hoffman Estates the victory. Austin Lesniak (14-of-27, 215 yards) threw two of his three touchdown passes in the final quarter. He tossed an 11-yarder to TJ Bond and a 35-yard scoring strike to Brandon Smith. Earlier, Lesniak connected with Torey Baskin (8 receptions, 123 yards) on a 17-yard touchdown pass.
Lakes 20, Grant 18:
Lakes (2-1, 1-0) came away with a few key special teams plays to post the victory. Lakes blocked an extra point and stopped a late 2-point conversion. The Eagles also turned away Grant (2-1, 0-1) at the Lakes’ 13-yard line in the final seconds to preserve the victory. Robbie Siebert had a 1-yard touchdown run for Lakes while Mason Crowley had an 11-yard touchdown run. Ean Ankney tossed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Will Mercure. Grant tallied on a 38-yard touchdown run by Tyler Zdon and a pair of touchdown passes from Matt Gipson (13-of-27, 287 yards) to Max Hembry (6 receptions, 195 yards) that covered 54 and 77 yards.
Schaumburg 26, Highland Park 24:
Schaumburg (2-1) held on as Highland Park missed a field goal with less than two minutes to play. Ray Black (14 carries, 216 yards) had touchdown runs of 80, 57 and 3 yards as the Saxons built a 26-10 lead early in the third quarter. Kyle Gough kicked a trio of extra points, had a 23-yard field goal and added six tackles, including one for a safety.
Wauconda 47, North Chicago 6:
Wauconda piled up 455 yards of offense to roll to the win. Jackson Rudolph rushed for a pair of touchdowns and gained 112 yards on 14 carries. He also caught a touchdown pass. Brody Rudolph also scored twice while rushing for 62 yards. Cole Korycanek had 82 yards and a touchdown along with a 2-point conversion. Jake Thorstenson (6-of-12, 94 yards) threw a pair of touchdown passes including a 17-yarder to Austin Zuraski.
Prospect 60, Niles West 7:
Prospect (2-1) rolled up 392 yards of offense while the Knight defense for three turnovers in the easy victory. Jackson Cacini (11-of-14, 282 yards) threw for three touchdowns and ran for two others. Devin Gerdes had three catches for 76 yards and a touchdown, Jacob Sutton had 5 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown while Nate Cicy had 7 catches for 80 yards and Gordy Kemp 5 catches for 62 yards. Matthew Donnelly 11 carries for 110 yards and had a rushing and receiving touchdown.
Conant 21, Vernon Hills 0:
Conant (1-2) used a strong running attack to end its 15-game losing streak. The Cougars amassed 324 rushing yards and scored all their points in the first half to lead them to the win. Vernon Hills (1-2) was led by Giuseppe Urso, who had 61 rushing yards.
Antioch 47, Grayslake Central 0:
Gavin Stone scored four touchdowns on runs of four, 50, 13 and 70 yards as the Sequoits (2-1, 1-0) rolled. Damion Johnson caught a pair of touchdown passes while Marcus Macias had a 2-yard touchdown run.
Rolling Meadows 55, Niles North 0:
Joe Brigham (193 yards passing) threw four touchdown passes, including a 58-yarder to a wide-open Jack Anderson and a pair of touchdown passes to Donovan Hunter as the Mustangs (2-1) rolled. Luke Harvey rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns while Keeling Murray added a 22-yard touchdown run. Rolling Meadows’ defense only allowed 74 yards of total offense to Niles North.
Lake Zurich 48, Waukegan 0:
Reid Pfeifer thew touchdown passes to Chris Chang (22 yards) and Ethan Elliott (33 yards) as Lake Zurich (2-1, 1-0) dominated. Kaden Abrantes had a 13-yard touchdown run, Eyan Hasemeyer scored on a 45-yard run and Charlie Grund tallied on a 38-yard run. Brock Rubicz forced a fumble and recovered it the end zone for a touchdown, Joseph Abbate IV and Nick Gast each had interceptions as the Bears forced four turnovers and held Waukegan to 83 yards.
Wheeling 46, Maine East 0:
Wheeling (1-2) rolled up all of its points in the first half as head coach Ryan Gronwick picked up his first victory. Christan Campos had a 53-yard scoring run and 4-yard touchdown run. He also returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to John Scanlon. Juliani Saldivar added a 6-yard touchdown run and a 23-yard field goal while Nicholas Montesinos had a 1-yard touchdown run. Maine East (0-3) had 38 yards of offense and turned the ball over five times.
Glenbrook North 31, Elk Grove 13:
The Grenadiers (0-3) fell as Luke Maher (28-of-27, 292 yards) threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Nicolas Kovac. Eric Sandoval had a 1-yard touchdown run, while Jacob Brumford rushed for 11 yards on 20 carries and Ryan Tanner had 10 catches for 80 yards.
Grayslake North 21, Round Lake 7:
Grayslake North (1-2, 1-0) threw three touchdown passes to pick up the win. Round Lake (1-2, 0-1) got a 20-yard touchdown pass from Evan West (14-of-27, 165 yards) to Marcus Ries. Devin Powell had 6 catches for 109 yards while Deantae Griggs had 14 carries for 92 yards.
Zion-Benton 19, Mundelein 14:
Mundelein (1-2, 0-1) had a touchdown pass and a fumble return for another score, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs fell.
Willowbrook 40, Leyden 8:
Leyden (1-2, 0-1) was led by Matthew Aquirre, who threw for 74 yards on 9-of-16 passing.
