Round Lake ends long drought with blowout victory
Round Lake hasn’t been on the winning side in the last three years.
The Panthers ended that 28-game losing streak in style Friday in Round Lake by rolling over Maine East 41-0.
Not only did the victory break the Panthers long losing streak, but it was also the first time a Round Lake team had ever had an opponent on a rolling clock.
“As far as the program is concerned, there has been an acceptance of losing here for a very long time,” first-year head coach Randi Dey said. “This win was the first step away from that. And I’m proud of our players to be the ones to do the work to get us out of it.
Round Lake, which only scored 45 points in all of their games last season, got rolling for the outset. Deantea Griggs had 17 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Evan West was 5-of-13 and threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another.
Maine East fell to 0-2.
Wauconda 35, Maine West 14:
Wauconda (2-0) piled up 427 rushing yards as the Bulldogs ran to an easy win. Jackson Rudolph (17 carries, 158 yards) had touchdown runs of 11 and 17 yards and caught a touchdown pass from Jake Thorstenson (4-of-7, 47 yards). Cole Korycanek (12 carries, 146 yards) had touchdown runs of 21 and 57 yards while Brody Rudolph (5 carries, 100 yards) became the third 100-yard rusher for the Bulldogs. Maine West (1-1) got a 69-yard touchdown run from Nathan Abede and a 20-yard touchdown pass from Abede to Paul Douris.
Kenwood 27, St. Viator 7:
Kenwood, ranked 12th in Class 5A, scored a trio of second-half touchdowns to pull away from St. Viator (1-1). Joey Lampignano (18-of-41, 138 yards) threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Frank Clary to tie the game late in the second quarter for St. Viator (1-1). Keaton Franzen and freshman Dylan Molina each caught 5 passes for the Lions while Wynn Phillipi had 10 tackles with 3 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.
Schaumburg 40, Elk Grove 14:
Xavier Tudela (17 carries, 84 yards) ran for two touchdowns while Vince Heydecker (15 carries, 106 yards ran for another for Schaumburg (1-1). Ray Black (13-of-22, 137 yards) threw touchdown passes to Rafael Medeiros and Tony Horton. Black also had a rushing touchdown. Elk Grove got touchdown passes from Nathan Dean to Ryan Tanner and from Luke Maher to Jerrmiah Wright.
Rolling Meadows 44, Conant 8:
Jack Brigham (18-of-26, 247 yards) threw for four touchdowns and ran for two others as Meadows (1-1) picked up the first head coaching win for Devonte Adams. Brigham threw a trio of touchdown passes to Sean Kerr (9 receptions, 109 yards) and another to Arman Lepuzanovic.
Hoffman Estates 63, Wheeling 6:
Hoffman Estates (2-0) had everything go its way. Torey Baskin hauled in touchdown receptions of 60 and 40 yards while Dumni Oginni had a 33-yard touchdown catch from Austin Lesniak (3-of-3, 133 yards, 3 touchdowns. Landon Ford, Quan Fields, Jmari Jackson, Riley Lennart and Braylin Scales added touchdown runs while TJ Bond had an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Wheeling (0-1) got a 75-yard touchdown run by Christian Campos.
Leyden 35, Niles North 12: Lucas Latiker had a huge day for Leyden (1-1). The senior rushed for 214 yards on 24 carries for four touchdowns as the Eagles flew. Matthew Aquirre (7-of-12, 98 yards) threw a touchdown pass to Dominick Ganir.
Lakes 49, Vernon Hills 6:
Lakes (1-1) pulled from away from a 7-6 lead thanks to five touchdown passes by Evan Ankney. Mason Crowley had a touchdown catch and a 52-yard scoring run. Trent Miller and John Zutkis each had touchdown receptions. Giuseppe Urso (10 carries, 72 yards) scored Vernon Hills’ (1-1) lone touchdown on a 36-yard pass from Colin McMurray.
Carmel 51, Lake Forest 7:
Carmel (2-0) put up 441 yards of total offense as the Corsairs rolled in Lake Forest. Quarterback Trae Taylor threw for three touchdowns and ran for another.
Lake Zurich 33, Antioch 0:
Reid Pfeiffer threw touchdown passes on 12 yards to Gavin Shondy and 64-yards to Chris Chaang as Lake Zurich (1-1) bounced back from last week’s loss to Fremd. Antioch fell to 1-1.
Grant 40, Glenbrook North 20:
Grant (2-0) had its offense in high gear with 494 yards as the Bulldogs rolled. Max Hembry had touchdown passes of 72 and 84 yards to Max Hembrey. Tyler Zdon had a touchdown run of 31 yards.
Grayslake Central 43, Bremen 29:
Grayslake Central (1-1) jumped out to a 29-7 halftime lead and the Rams cruised from there. The Rams forced 5 turnovers, three of which came in the first quarter.
Elgin 40, Grayslake North 26:
Elgin pulled away from a 14-14 tie at the half to give Grayslake North (0-2) the loss.
Mundelein 18, Niles West 14:
Mundelein (1-1) bounced back from an opening week loss to post the win.
