Finding her utopia: Julie Curran’s dream life at The Woods at K-B House
After 36 years in Flossmoor, Julie Curran was ready for a change; one that brought her closer to family, offered peace of mind for the future, and delivered a sense of everyday joy. She found all of that and more at her newly renovated cottage in The Woods at K-B House, a place she describes as being like her "Shangri-La."
Julie made the move to be near her children and grandchildren, who live in the western suburbs. "All of us now are within 20 minutes of each other," she said. Julie enjoys winters in Arizona, but knew it was time to put down more secure roots for the future.
As an elegant and dignified Life Plan Community, K-B House features an active, independent lifestyle while also offering all levels of care, including assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing.
From Dream to Reality
The Woods of K-B House is the campus neighborhood that features large, Georgian-style cottages. When Julie first visited The Woods last December, she toured a beautifully renovated model. She then toured a cottage that was being updated. She was excited to learn that if she selected that unit, she’d be able to help with the redesign. "I was able to pick out the finishes, and I had a generous budget to redo the residence," she said. She curated a beautiful home that reflects her personal taste and lifestyle.
Julie oversaw the renovation from afar while spending the winter in Scottsdale. Her children sent photos throughout the process, and by the time she returned in May, everything was complete. "When I came back from Arizona, the place was done."
Home Sweet Home
The two-story home is spacious. The lower level includes a large bedroom, bath, living area, and enormous storage space, ideal for comfort, convenience and guests. The main level features a beautiful kitchen, additional living space, bedroom, office, and her favorite spot: a screened-in porch overlooking a lush, wooded area. "I love it so much," she said. "The setting is beautiful. And the grounds are gorgeous."
The home offers more than just beauty. It brings Julie peace of mind. Young and vibrant at the age of 75, Julie said, "I’m fit and live independently, but anything can happen at any time. I have a sense of peace for my future, being here. I can get help if I need it.”
Making the decision to move now on her own terms was important to her. "Leaving decisions like this up to my children would be so difficult for the family, and I don’t want that. They’re grateful and feel really good about this."
A Life Well Lived and Still Thriving
"Julie’s life at K-B House is vibrant and full of connection, with a wide range of programs and entertainment available. In addition to enjoying the many activities within the community, she leads a very active life outside of it as well. She is an active volunteer, very involved in her church, golfs three times weekly, and is a member of Olympia Fields Country Club.
She enjoys the independence of her cottage with its attached garage and having her own car but also appreciates the reliable transportation services provided by K-B House. "Parking in Hinsdale is ridiculous. Transportation here is very accommodating and easy," she added.
Now, with her dream home, a thriving community, and the comfort of knowing she’s close to loved ones, Julie feels deeply content. "It’s a brand-new home and I have the reassurance for my future. It’s such a load off my mind. It’s absolutely perfect. I’'m so grateful," she said.
Julie Curran has truly found her perfect place, her own personal Shangri-La, in the heart of The Woods at K-B House.
