Wheaton Municipal Band presents its season finale concert

It’s only the beginning of August, but it feels like the end of summer when the Wheaton Municipal Band plays its final concert of the season.

Don’t miss the finale of concerts in the park at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, in Memorial Park, when the Wheaton Municipal Band performs an eclectic concert of favorites.

Dr. Bruce Moss, music director, dug into the band’s library and pulled out music that has delighted audience over the years.

Usually, the last WMB’s concert signals a long hiatus until next summer; however, this season the band has been invited to perform at the prestigious American Band Masters Association Conference at the Harris Theatre in Chicago on March 5, 2026.

This invitation and honor puts the Wheaton Municipal Band once more on the world stage, as did the band’s performances (three times) at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic at McCormick Place. Congratulations to Dr. Moss and the Wheaton Municipal Band.

As is the tradition with the Wheaton Municipal Band, the concert features a soloist from the band-trombonist Liam Kantzler performing “Concertino in F” by Ernst Sachse. Kantzler currently is pursuing a master’s degree in performance at Northwestern University.

Thursday’s concert presents music of Wheaton Municipal Band plays its final summer concert on August 7th, featuring favorites like Phantom of the Opera and John Williams, before performing at a prestigious conference in March., “Variations on a Shaker Melody.”

Copland, the beloved American composer, often uses folk tunes in his works. His genius of weaving the simple melodies into complex rhythmic and harmonic structures makes the music endearing yet interesting to listen to.

Also on the concert is a medley of music from “Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Round out a “favorites” concert with music of John Williams, The Beach Boys and a couple of marches, and it is a perfect evening in the park. The concert leaves the audience wanting more, but that won’t happen until next summer.
