Suburban firefighters battled in a charity ice hockey tournament Saturday in Mount Prospect.
Representatives of 16 fire departments faced off in “Fire on Ice” matches that ran for 12 hours at the Nicholas Sportsplex in Mount Prospect.
“It adds a little rivalry,” said Jim Trippi, a 14-year veteran firefighter with the Evanston Fire Department participating in the tournament for the second year. “But, it’s good, healthy competition.”
The event, which included silent auctions, raffles and other activities, benefits the families of fallen and injured emergency personnel through the 100 Club of Illinois and the Shield 23 Foundation.
“It’s good to see guys that we sometimes wind up going to work with on bigger fires,” said Vincent Puccini, a firefighter with the Evanston Fire Department, also participating for the second year. “When we work with each other, we rely on each other. Everyone gets good exercise and it’s nice and competitive. It’s good for the people that show up to watch and support, so it’s all a good turnout.”
