Wheaton replacing outdoor tornado siren

The city of Wheaton is replacing an outdoor weather siren on Morse Street near Wheaton North High School after recent high winds from a storm damaged the siren.

The city anticipates the repair to be done in the next few weeks. The city also issued a reminder that outdoor tornado sirens are intended to alert people who are outside that dangerous weather is approaching and that they should seek shelter immediately.

The National Weather Service reiterates that outdoor sirens are not meant to be heard inside your home and should not be your primary or only warning source.

The city also encourages residents to have multiple ways to receive emergency weather alerts, such as through cellphones, local TV or radio news stations, or weather radios. The weather service also notes that a NOAA Weather Radio can wake you up if you’re sleeping when an alert is issued.
