Garden walks
Elmhurst Garden Walk & Faire: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, July 13. “An Afternoon in the Garden” showcases six private and public gardens, along with a boutique in Wilder Park, 211 S. Prospect Ave. Proceeds go to fund student scholarships. In 2024, the Elmhurst Garden Club awarded $26,545 in scholarship awards to five Illinois resident college students and to one York High School student. Proceeds also benefit many other community projects. No tickets are sold at Wilder Park. Tickets, $30 day of, are online only via elmhurstgardenclub.org/garden-walk-faire/.
Westchester Garden Walk: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, July 19. Grassroots Garden Group’s seventh annual walk will be in honor of Westchester's 100th birthday featuring 11 gardens across the town. Proceeds benefit Westchester Food Pantry. Check-in tent at the Fountain Area at the northeast corner of Mannheim and Cermak. $20 or $25 day of. Tickets: grassrootsgardengroup.org.
A Walk in The Shire: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive, Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire Garden Club’s third annual garden walk will showcase five beautiful gardens that will be sure to inspire. In addition, each location will have its own featured artist. Start at Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive in Lincolnshire, to pick up your brochure with the home addresses and descriptions. This event is best suited to children over the age of 12. Tickets prior to July 19 are $20. Tickets can be purchased for $25 at Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 19. Bloomingdale Garden Club, “Plat Propagation”: 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Cornerstone Faith Community Church, 118 First St., Bloomingdale. Horticulturist and certified arborist Dolly Foster will discuss stem cuttings, layering and divisions. It will cover the procedures and pitfalls of making your own plants. Lombard Garden Club, “Phone Photography”: 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 17, First Church of Lombard’s Hatfield Hall, 220 S. Main St. Photojournalist Erica Benson will show how to use your phone’s camera to photograph gardens and nature vistas, with results showing flowers and vegetables to the best advantage. Saving Monarchs Garden Party: 2-7 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Charlotte Street and Harding Avenue, Lombard. Saving Monarchs is once again opening up their yard for their annual garden party. Learn about monarch butterflies, native plants, conservation, flood control issues, and more. The Conservation Foundation, The River Prairie Group of the Sierra Club, DuPage Monarch Project, DuPage Organic Garden Club, Wild Ones Greater DuPage, Sustain DuPage, Jan’s Stepping Stones, and Prairie Wind Native Plants will have natives for sale. Cantigny’s Fall Preview Greenhouse Tour: 3-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. The greenhouse manager will unveil a curated selection of plants destined for the fall gardens. Explore the greenhouse and discover an array of autumnal treasures, from richly-hued foliage to late-blooming flowers. Gain insights into the cultivation and care of these seasonal beauties, and learn how they contribute to the tapestry of colors that will adorn Cantigny in the coming months. Cactus & Succulent Society of Greater Chicago Show & Sale: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 19-20, in the Burnstein Hall at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Regenstein Center, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. A show and sale presented by the Cactus and Succulent Society of Greater Chicago featuring hundreds of exotic and unusual plants, including cacti and succulents typically found in deserts, tropical jungles, and mountain highlands. Plants from expert growers will be for sale. Society members will be on-hand to answer questions and offer advice on proper plant care. Cash is preferred at the sale; ATM near the garden gift shop. Garden Clubs of Illinois Inc. District IX Flower Show: Noon-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, and 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, in the Burnstein Hall at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Regenstein Center, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Presented by the Garden Clubs of Illinois, this show features judged flower arrangements and exhibits, as well as a cut horticulture competition.
