Elgin and Streamwood libraries to receive over $317,000
Elgin’s Gail Borden Public Library and Streamwood’s Poplar Creek Public Library are set to receive over $317,000 through state grants.
The Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants are awarded annually, and support public libraries across Illinois. The per capita grants assist libraries to provide library services that meet Illinois library standards.
The equalization grants provide additional support to help public libraries with a low library tax base to ensure a minimum level of funding for library services.
In tandem, the combined funding can be used to support collection development, including books and materials, online resources and internet access, personnel, public programming and capital improvements.
Gail Borden Public Library of Elgin received $221,113, and Poplar Creek Public Library of Streamwood received $96,826, totaling $317,939 combined, according to state Sen. Christina Castro, who announced the grant allocations Wednesday.
“This funding is more than just a line item — it’s an investment in making sure valuable resources and services are available to everyone in our communities,” the Elgin Democrat said. “With additional support, Elgin and Streamwood families will benefit from the diverse range of books, online collections, multilingual materials and summer programming at their local libraries for years to come.”
Library officials expressed their gratitude for the funding, stressing how it will affect local communities.
“We’re very pleased that Sen. Castro and the other state legislators are funding the grant,” said Natalie Kilburg Division Chief of Public Relations & Development at Gail Borden Library. “It’s a very appreciated and wise decision to support libraries. We impact the communities in so many ways, it allows access to resources like internet, and a myriad other tools.”
The grant program is overseen by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office. This year alone, the agency has awarded $18 million to 639 public libraries across the state, state officials said.
Addison and Bensenville libraries also received grant funds, according to Senate President Don Harmon’s office. Addison received $52,660, while Bensenville received $32,114.
