Former Bartlett police intern returning as department’s new top cop

Bartlett has selected Ryan Conway as its new police chief, with swearing-in scheduled for July 1. He replaces Geoffrey Pretkelis, who recently retired.

Village President Daniel Gunsteen and the board of trustees confirmed the appointment at Tuesday's meeting. Conway most recently served as deputy chief of operations for the Wheaton police department.

The appointment represents a homecoming for Conway, who interned with Bartlett police in 2004.

“That early experience left a lasting impression on me and played a pivotal role in shaping the foundation of my career,” Conway said.

During his Wheaton career beginning in 2004, Conway advanced through various positions including patrol sergeant, operations lieutenant, support lieutenant and ultimately deputy chief in 2022.

Conway holds degrees from Western Illinois University and Lewis University, plus a certification from the University of Virginia, in addition graduating from the FBI National Academy.

Gunsteen said Conway was chosen after reviewing 27 applicants and interviewing eight finalists, praising his “dedication to community focused policing.”
