North Barrington’s Hutson named NHL rookie of the year

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson is the 2024-25 winner of the Calder Trophy for NHL rookie of the year. The 21-year-old from North Barrington beat out two fellow finalists in Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf and San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini.

Hutson scored six goals and recorded 60 assists in 82 games with the Canadiens this season. His 66 points tied him with Phil Housley for fourth-most among rookies in a single season, while his 60 assists tied him with Larry Murphy for the most. Hutson also finished tied for sixth in scoring among all defensemen this season and tied with Vancouver Canucks defender Quinn Hughes for second in assists.

Wolf finished his first full NHL season with a 29-16-8 record in 53 games, setting a record for most games played by a Flames rookie goalie. The Californian registered a 2.64 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and three shutouts, the latter of which also set a Flames record for a rookie goalie.

Celebrini was the No. 1 pick in last summer’s NHL Draft. The North Vancouver native scored 25 goals and 63 points in his debut season with the Sharks. His goal and point totals were both second-best among rookies. Celebrini had a five-point game in April against the Columbus Blue Jackets, making him the sixth 18-year-old in NHL history to accomplish the feat.

Hutson follows last year’s Calder winner, Chicago forward Connor Bedard. The award is decided by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. Hutson received 165 of 191 potential first-place votes, with Wolf and Celebrini picking up the remaining 15 and 11, respectively.
