Elburn begins construction on expanded village hall
Construction has begun on a new village hall/police station expansion in Elburn.
Officials recently kicked off the project with a groundbreaking ceremony. The existing building was constructed in 1992.
When a ballot measure for a new police station failed in 2023, the village began to look for other funding options. It eventually decided to implement a 2% “places for eating” tax on prepared food and beverages to help pay for the new facility.
In 2024, the village board members decided to expand the current village hall/police station instead of building a new facility. They agreed to borrow $6 million to fund the project.
Work on the project is scheduled to be completed by April 2026.
Although the footprint of the expansion has been reduced from the plan for a new building, Village President Jeff Walter said the village was able to keep most of the items on the police department’s wish list.
There will be secure fenced-in parking for the police cars behind the building. There also will be a covered parking area from which detainees can safely be brought into the building through a sally port.
There will be a separate evidence store room, a room to secure weapons and ammunition, and a secured interview room. There will also be male and female locker rooms with showers.
The police department consists of 12 full-time officers, six part-time officers, two full-time and one part-time records staff and two part-time community service officers, according to village documents.
