Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias visits West Northfield middle school

West Northfield School District 31 recently welcomed Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias to Field Middle School on Friday, May 30.

Approximately 340 students in sixth to eighth grade gathered for a special assembly with Giannoulias, who shared insights about his role in state government, his personal journey, and the importance of leadership at all stages of life.

During his visit, Giannoulias spoke about the responsibilities of the Secretary of State’s Office and emphasized the values of gratitude, civic engagement, and giving back to one’s community. The assembly concluded with a lively Q&A session, where students asked thoughtful and wide-ranging questions, demonstrating their curiosity and enthusiasm for public service.

The visit was especially meaningful for Giannoulias, who has strong family ties to Field Middle School. His cousins — Chris (Class of ’86), Steve (Class of ’91), and Kosta (Class of ’94) — are all proud alumni.

His nieces, Gia (sixth grade) and Ambri (eighth grade), currently attend Field and had the honor of introducing their uncle at the event. As a token of appreciation, students presented Giannoulias with a Field-themed gift basket.

A special thank you to eighth-grade ELA teacher Mary Beth Hulting for organizing this memorable experience, and to Giannoulias for inspiring our students with his visit.

Field Middle School proudly embraces and celebrates its diverse community and the unique backgrounds that enrich our school environment.
