Special tribute to Steve McMichael planned for Walk ALS at Cantigny Park

May is designated ALS Awareness Month to raise awareness about the disease, support individuals and families affected, and advocate for research and care.

On Saturday, May 31, the ALS United Greater Chicago is hosting its Walk ALS at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

People living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, family, friends, co-workers, corporations and neighbors participate in the fun and interactive day. The fundraising goal is $600,000.

There are plenty of activities before the walk begins, such as a Kids’ Zone with face painting and inflatables, costumed characters, Zumba, a DJ, and a performance by an Irish dance troupe. Breakfast and lunch also will be served.

The Bagpipes & Drums of the Emerald Society of the Chicago Police Department will lead the Walk ALS with a special performance in honor of Steve “Mongo” McMichael, who passed away on April 23, 2025 from complications of ALS.

McMichael was an honorary member of the band.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with the walk at 10 a.m. at Cantigny,

Individuals are encouraged to register beforehand, but day-of registration is available.
