Wheaton house fire closes stretch of Roosevelt Road

A Wheaton house fire closed a portion of Roosevelt Road for about two hours on Tuesday.

The Wheaton Fire Department responded at about 11:20 a.m. to a structure fire in the 600 block of Polo Drive, officials said. They encountered heavy fire and smoke from an attached garage and attic, with smoke coming out of the second-floor eaves.

Firefighters controlled the fire within about 30 minutes. The house was vacant at the time, officials said. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury.

Roosevelt Road was closed between Adare Drive and Pierce Avenue to position vehicles and equipment to battle the fire. At 12:10 p.m., the city of Wheaton said the area of closure had expanded to County Farm Road to Dorchester Avenue.

Officials opened Roosevelt Road to traffic by 1:40 p.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the building was turned over to the DuPage County sheriff’s office, officials stated.
