District 62 athletes to shine at upcoming Special Olympics May 10

Community Consolidated School District 62 has announced its participation in this year’s Special Olympics, which will be held at 8 a.m., May 10, at Prospect High School, 801 W. Kensington Road, Mount Prospect.

“This event provides our students with the opportunity to showcase their talents and sportsmanship,” Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Dr. Ramona DeCristofaro said. “This is the first time District 62 students have participated in the Special Olympics and we could not be more proud or excited to see them shine on May 10.”

A team of 28 athletes from Algonquin Middle School, Chippewa Middle School, Cumberland Elementary School and Terrace Elementary School will represent District 62 in a variety of sporting events.

“I was inspired to get involved with the Special Olympics because everyone deserves the opportunity to compete and to test themselves and their abilities,” said Jacob Bultema, a coach from Terrace Elementary School.

According to the Special Olympics website, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

“I am grateful to our Student Services team, Special Education Parent Advisory Council as well as the coaches, volunteers and families who have supported our students become athletes,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Amadei said. “I look forward to this special day as we celebrate these young athletes.”

Student athlete Julissa is looking forward to her big day.

“It reminds me of the Olympics,” Julissa said.
