Complacency marks incumbent mayor
The March 12 Mount Prospect mayoral debate highlighted a stark contrast between the two candidates. Paul Hoefert boasted about his 40 years on the village board, yet his leadership appears stagnant. In contrast, Trisha Chokshi brings a dynamic combination of experience as a lawyer, business owner and dedicated community volunteer. Her proactive leadership has already earned her the endorsement of Mount Prospect Firefighters 4119, thanks to her efforts in submitting a grant application.
During the debate, Mayor Hoefert stated that the most qualified person should get the job. By that standard, Trisha Chokshi is the clear choice — not only because of her qualifications and experience in both the public and private sectors, but also because she has a forward-thinking vision for Mount Prospect.
Beyond policy and qualifications, leadership is also about values. A particularly telling moment in the debate came when a resident’s question addressed the village’s inadequate response to a hate crime targeting LGBTQ+ youth. While Chokshi directly addressed the issue, Hoefert failed to take the simplest of stands. The original question stemmed from the Village’s failure to issue such a statement at the time of the attack — yet even when given a second chance, the mayor remained silent.
Was this a failure to understand, or a refusal to act? Either way, it’s unacceptable. It is disqualifying. Mayor Hoefert claimed in his opening statement that safety is one of his top priorities — yet when LGBTQ+ youth were brutally attacked under his watch, he did nothing. What about their safety, Mayor Hoefert?
Mount Prospect cannot afford to be trapped in complacency. We need bold leadership and a vision for the future. Trisha Chokshi has proven she is a powerhouse, ready to lead our village forward.
