Bio

Office sought: Lake Park High School District 108 board (Vote for 4)

City: Roselle

Previous offices held: Lake Park District 108 School Board 2016-present; Roselle Elementary District 12 board, 1999-2003

Why are you running for this office? Is there a particular issue that motivates you?

I am running for this office because I value education and I believe that my vast experience as a teacher will is very valuable in helping to guide this district forward.

What is the role of the school board in setting and monitoring the curriculum?

The school board is responsible for setting the curriculum. I believe it is up to the superintendent and the other administrators to monitor the implementation of that curriculum. Overreach by the school board can be very detrimental to the entire school setting.

Are there curriculum issues within the district that you feel need particular attention from the board?

I believe that there is a great process in place to address those concerns. Since the adoption of the strategic plan, the district has a better compass to navigate the development and implementation of the curriculum.

How do you view your role in confronting policy or curriculum controversies: provide leadership even if unpopular, give a voice to constituents — even ones with whom you disagree, or defer to state authorities?

My role is to be one member of a seven-member school board that collectively makes appropriate decisions for the district for the betterment of the entire community. COVID was a very difficult time to navigate unpopular decisions. All that a person can do is gather as much information as possible, talk with all groups that are involved, and then make the best decision that you can.

Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage school district policy? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions for your school board.

I have served on the policy committee of the district. Communication with all stakeholders is the key to understanding, building and implementing policy. You cannot simply rely on your own personal beliefs and experiences. You must delve into the needs of the entire community, listen to those who are of differing opinions, and then make a decision as to the best course of action.

What is your assessment of the school district's diversity and equity efforts? Do you support the continuation or enhancement of such programs, or would you rather see them diminished. Please explain your reasoning.

Given the makeup much of the community surrounding Lake Park, I feel it is very important to keep an eye on diversity and inclusion.

It is our duty to see that every single student feels valued and included in the educational process. This cannot be taken lightly or allowed to slip through the cracks.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

I have lived in the community for 30 years. Our children are products of the education provided by the district. I have been an educator for 40 years. I have volunteered in this community as a youth minister and scout leader. I have 9 years of experience on the board to help us to continue moving forward. I am a man of great character, solid family values, and possess a deep understanding of what it takes to work in a group setting to achieve a common goal.

What’s one good idea you have to better your district that no one is talking about yet?

I really don't have one.
