Daily Herald awarded Better Business Bureau Diogenes Award
The Daily Herald has been recognized with the Better Business Bureau’s Diogenes Award for Excellence in Media.
Managing Editor of Administration and Opinion Jim Slusher accepted the award during the Better Business Bureau’s 99th anniversary dinner Thursday at the Hilton Chicago, attended by more than 600 business professionals from across the region.
“It was so uplifting to hear praises for the paper not just from the presenter who introduced us and handed us the trophy, but also from dozens of people before and after the ceremony who are familiar with the paper, its news and sports coverage as well as business (coverage),” Slusher said.
The Diogenes Award is presented annually to individuals or organizations that exemplify extraordinary efforts in educating and informing the public about consumer information.
“The award is named after the ancient Greek philosopher, Diogenes, who was said to have traveled the streets of Athens with a lantern, looking for an honest man, and is presented to a media person or group who exemplifies the goals and principles of the Better Business Bureau and represents true greatness in journalism,” said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau.
“We are so grateful to have BBB stories and columns in this invaluable publication, which has been suburban Chicago's source for news since 1871 and such a great representation of true excellence in journalism.”
The Daily Herald’s team was recognized for working “seamlessly to develop impactful journalism for businesses and consumers.”
“We are deeply touched and honored by this prestigious award,” Daily Herald Executive Editor Lisa Miner said. “The Better Business Bureau does such important work, and their recognition speaks to the newspaper’s long commitment to reader-focused suburban coverage.
“Each day we ask ourselves how we can be helpful to readers. Often, the answer to that question is to provide information on how they can protect themselves in person and online. We share that mission with the Better Business Bureau,” she said.
