Lake Park film society to show Christie classic, ‘Murder on the Orient Express’

Lake Park High School’s Film Appreciation Society presents the Agatha Christie classic, “Murder on the Orient Express,” on Wednesday, March 12. The free event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Lake Park High School West Campus auditorium, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Roselle.

The screening will showcase the 1974 rendition in which director Sidney Lumet transports you to 1935 and the elegant trappings of the first-class train departing Istanbul.

Albert Finney is venerable Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, whose little gray cells must deduce who perpetrated the grisly stabbing murder of a passenger onboard their snowbound train. The ensemble cast is one for the ages, including stars Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, and Vanessa Redgrave. The run time of the film is 2 hours, 8 minutes.

A special presentation will be given by guest speaker and Agatha Christie expert Kate Gingold. She has written “Agatha Annotated,” a glossary of obscure terms and historical references that Christie placed in her stories. The first volume covers the books of the 1920s and is available as a paperback, Kindle eBook, or via a membership website. Gingold will be signing copies at the end of the evening for parties interested in purchasing her book.

Patrons also will be able to cast their votes for the film selection of the next Lake Park Film Appreciation Society presentation in April, which will focus on wars of the 20th century.

The Lake Park Film Appreciation Society aims to engage the community in the presentation, exploration, interpretation, and critical discussion of classic cinema.
