Community colleges to receive grants to expand mental health resources

The Illinois Community College Board has awarded more than $3.6 million to expand mental health resources and support programs for college students across the state.

Among the 32 recipients are College of Lake County in Grayslake ($120,000), McHenry County College in Crystal Lake ($118,788), Oakton College in Des Plaines ($100,280), and Harper College in Palatine ($119,699).

The funding comes as a result of the Mental Health Early Action on Campus (MHEAC) Act passed by the state in 2020. The law aims to address mental health services needs on college campuses through training, peer support, and community-campus partnerships, according to the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

“We know many college students nationwide face mental health challenges.

“A recent U.S. News survey revealed nearly 70% of college students report struggling with their mental health,” said Illinois Community College Board Executive Director Brian Durham in a news release. “This investment will help community colleges better meet the needs of students outside the classroom, contributing to their success in the classroom.”

Selected colleges will receive the funding this fiscal year.
