‘Singin’ in the Rain’ next up for Lake Park High Film Appreciation Society

Lake Park High School’s Film Appreciation Society is kicking off 2025 with its next film screening on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

It will be held at a new, earlier time: 6 p.m. The free event will be held in the school’s West Campus auditorium, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Roselle.

The “Hollywood on Hollywood” themed selection for this month's film is the 1952 musical, “Singin’ in the Rain,” jointly directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly.

The film stars Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, along with Kelly. Other notable roles are filled by Jean Hagen, Cyd Charisse, and Rita Moreno. The run time of the film is 1 hour, 43 minutes.

In 1927 Hollywood, as “talkies” are becoming the newest sensation following the success of “The Jazz Singer,” studios must scramble to compete in this newfangled, technical cinematic landscape. Egos and media-fabricated vs. actual romantic relationships add to the chaos as the silent film stars try to pull off the fictional musical-within-a-musical. Iconic song and dance numbers in this film will delight the audience. It is perhaps Gene Kelly's finest work.

Community film buffs are invited to attend the cinematic presentation and stay for an in-depth panel discussion regarding the background and history of the featured film. Patrons also will be able to cast their votes for the film selection of the next presentation on March 12, which will spotlight Agatha Christie.

The Lake Park Film Appreciation Society aims to engage the community in the presentation, exploration, interpretation, and critical discussion of classic cinema.
