Harper College seeks volunteers for free ultrasounds

The Harper College Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs are seeking volunteers to be scanned by students who are getting ready to work in a hospital setting. Volunteers will help prepare students to perform critical ultrasounds that can save lives.

Available ultrasound exams include echocardiograms of the heart (participants must be at least 18 years old) and obstetric ultrasounds (participants must be at least 18 weeks pregnant). The OB ultrasounds may include 2D/3D images, which volunteers can receive a copy of via flash drive provided by the volunteer. Please note that OB clients must be in good standing with an OBGYN and not have any complications with their pregnancy.

Limited appointments are available and will begin in mid-February. Echocardiogram exams will be scheduled for between 4 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Obstetric ultrasounds will be scheduled for between 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursdays and between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The free exams last about an hour and are non-diagnostic. Volunteers will not receive a medical report but may be instructed to follow up with a physician. All exams will be performed by students on state-of-the-art equipment, under the supervision of a registered diagnostic medical or cardiac sonographer. Harper’s program conforms to all patient safety regulations.
