Northbrook Park District gets $600K grant to improve West Park

The Northbrook Park District was awarded a $600,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to fund improvements at one of its largest and most popular community parks.

West Park, located at 1730 Pfingsten Road behind the Northbrook Sports Center, was originally built in 1965.

The grant from the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program will help fund a project that will include the renovation of three tennis courts, one sand volleyball court and segments of existing trail and the playground, as well as the addition of a picnic shelter, segments of trail to create a two-thirds mile continuous loop within the park, a multiuse sport court and native plantings.

“The Northbrook Park District is excited to receive this OSLAD grant to revitalize West Park,” said Chris Leiner, Northbrook Park District Executive Director. “This park provides 24 acres of open space and recreational amenities for the Northbrook community. The renovations and amenity additions made possible by this grant will ensure West Park remains an integral and accessible community location for recreation and outdoor enjoyment for generations to come.”

The total cost of the project is estimated between $2 million and $2.2 million.

As with any project of this size, Northbrook Park District sought input from the community through an online survey in June and two in-person meetings held in May and August.

The grant was among more than $55.2 million in OSLAD funding awarded in fiscal year 2025 to 100 local park projects throughout Illinois to help communities acquire land and develop recreational opportunities.

Established in 1927, the mission of the Northbrook Park District is to enhance the community by providing outstanding services, parks and facilities through environmental, social and financial stewardship.
