‘Disco Fever’ theme for Northbrook Park District’s family dance

The Northbrook Park District’s “Light Up the Night” family dance will be back next month with a “Disco Fever” theme — so get ready to boogie and tap into your inner John (and Jane) Travolta.

The dance on Friday, Feb. 7 is open to children ages 4 to 13 and their chosen adult companions and will feature live DJ music, appetizers, games and desserts. At the start of the night, adults and children will receive a corsage or boutonniere. Children are invited to attend with their special person — whether mom, dad, guardian, stepparent or another important adult in their lives — for a night full of fun while creating memories together.

“This is a fun, high-energy event that the whole family can enjoy,” Recreation Manager Nancy Eschker said.

The Family Dance has become a tradition for many, including Seth Schrank and his 8-year-old daughter Mira. The duo will once again join about a dozen dads and daughters who each year attend the Family Dance together.

“Mira and I have really enjoyed it over the years. It’s a fun night and a special time for her and I to spend together,” Schrank said. “We go with a group of friends — a number of girls from her class at Wescott School and their dads. They get to dance, the dads get to hang out and dance with the girls, and it’s all in all a good evening.”

All couples will leave with a souvenir photo, which Schrank said is one of the highlights of the evening. “I keep mine at my desk at home, so I look at it every day,” he said.

The event was known as the Daddy-Daughter Dance until 2023; the name change reflected the park district’s desire to be inclusive and ensure all families feel welcome.

In a change of venue, this year’s event takes place in the gym of Techny Prairie Activity Center, which will be decked out to resemble a swanky dance club.

“The new location has been chosen based on families’ feedback over the years and to help keep the event more affordable for families while still offering great activities, food and music,” Eschker said.

Light Up the Night Family Dance takes place 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 7 at Techny Prairie Activity Center, 180 Anets Drive in Northbrook.

Tickets for each adult-child pair are $99 for residents and $125 for nonresidents. Additional persons are $55 for residents and $69 for nonresidents.
