Daily Herald photo contest winners for December 2024

The winning entries in the Daily Herald’s amateur photo contest for December capture life's joyful and mysterious moments.

Taking top honors is Robbie Livingston’s fantastic photo capturing the expressions of joy from young football fans after a touchdown. The high school student from Wheaton writes, “This picture I selected has really stuck with me. I think that it encompasses the emotion of admiration really well, seeing the younger boys cheering on #16 after he scored a touchdown.”

A picture taken by Sue Kowall during a visit in August to the historic wharf in Bergen, Norway. Sue Kowall of Hoffman Estates

Coming in second is Sue Kowall’s “Puzzle Perfect” photo of the historic Bryggen wharf along the shore of Vågen harbor in Bergen, Norway. These historic buildings are on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites. The Hoffman Estates resident writes, “Ironically, we put together a thousand piece puzzle of this exact same view last winter. It was fun to make the puzzle come alive.”

A picture taken in November of Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel atop a mountain ridge in southern Peru. David Ross of Gurnee

David Ross’s otherworldly photo of the historic Inca stronghold nestled in the Peruvian mountains takes third. The Gurnee resident writes, “Machu Picchu is very mysterious, and thousands of pictures are taken there, but I took this one in monochrome because it seemed to make it even more mysterious.”

A photo taken during an evening stroll in St. Charles. Matthew Davis of Elgin

In fourth place, Matthew Davis of Elgin captures the chilly beauty of a dormant oak tree tracing an intricate design across the moonlit sky. He writes, “A nighttime walk through St. Charles allowed me to capture this shot of the moon peeking through the oak tree limbs.”

An honorable mention goes to Randy Link of Warrenville for his striking photo of a fox outside his house. He writes, “So I went down to the rec room where I was almost even with the ground level. It enabled me to get an ‘eye to eye’ shot of the fox while he was hunting its next meal. My wife said that ‘I outfoxed the fox.’”
