New household waste removal service available in Wheeling
Wheeling residents can get rid of chemicals and other potentially dangerous garbage through a new service that launched this month.
Clean Harbors Environmental Services will remove hazardous waste left at a front door or driveway or on a porch through a partnership with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County.
Automotive fluids, pesticides, cleaning fluids, hobby materials and other chemicals are eligible for pickup. A list of acceptable and unacceptable materials is available at swancc.org/recycling/chemical-and-paint-disposal.
Pickups can be scheduled by calling (866) 466-5060 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or by visiting form.jotform.com/242978262215158.
Clean Harbors will get an inventory of what residents want picked up to ensure the items are acceptable. The company then will schedule pickups based on its workload and routes.
The company also will help residents find safe outlets for waste that can’t be picked up. For example, unwanted gasoline and motor oil can be taken to a service station or repair shop.
Clean Harbors will give participating residents instructions for preparing and putting out the trash. It also will mail participants heavy, clear plastic bags to contain the materials. Collections have a 70-pound weight limit.
The program is only for residents with curbside garbage collection.
The program is free to use, but residents will be charged $75 if pickups are canceled the day of a scheduled visit or if no materials are put out on that day.
