Chicago Steel team plays adapted hockey game while volunteering at Marklund

Members of the Chicago Steel hockey team played an adapted-style hockey game with Marklund residents on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Hyde Center in Geneva.

During a community service volunteer visit, the 12 players were buddied-up with the residents, adults who have severe developmental disabilities, to play Marklund-style hockey using wood and plastic sticks and a foam ball puck.

The result was pure fun and excitement as the players maneuvered each resident’s wheelchair around the room to try to score goals.

“We love having the local teams come out and give of their time to volunteer with our residents,” said Nikki Osterloh, manager of volunteer engagement. “The residents loved it, of course, and it was clear the players all had fun, getting to know them and helping them play the game.”
