Wheaton’s Gary UMC to offer study on women surrounding Jesus’ birth
Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton will host “Remembering Our Mothers: The Women of the Infancy Narratives and Liberation Theology” on Sundays, Dec. 1-22.
This Advent Bible study invites participants to remember and approach the presence of the women surrounding Jesus’ birth, along with the women in our lives today, as an expression of liberation theology.
Such an approach liberates because to remember is to undo the oppressive machinations that trivialize and even erase the memories and presence of the marginalized.
The Rev. Dr. Dong Hyeon Jeong will lead the study at 10:10 a.m. at the church, 224 N. Main St.
He is the assistant professor of New Testament Interpretation and the director of the Center for Asian/Asian American Ministry at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He is an ordained elder/pastor of The United Methodist Church (Philippines Conference).
His research highlights the importance of reading/interpreting the New Testament with social justice perspectives.
The church has music, kids, youth and adult ministries, plus opportunities for local, national and global missions. Gary Church offers worship at 9 and 11:11 a.m. In-between services, there’s Sunday school for all ages, a coffee fellowship hour, plus the chapel is available for prayer and reflection.
