Northbrook student takes a stand against food insecurity with Free Mini Pantry
Seventh grader Nathan Metzl is addressing food insecurity in Northbrook by establishing Legacy Pantry, a Free Mini Pantry in the community. Nathan and his family were joined by elected officials, community leaders and teachers at a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 7.
While visiting Starved Rock State Park this summer, Nathan discovered a Free Mini Pantry in Ottawa, Illinois, which motivated him to take action in his own hometown. Recognizing that food insecurity exists even in affluent communities, the Mini Pantry provides a supplemental option for individuals in need.
“I realized that Northbrook did not have a Free Mini Pantry, and I wanted to change that,” Nathan said. “Mini Pantries are a grass-roots solution that can help those who fall through the cracks.”
Nathan presented his idea at a recent Northbrook Village Board meeting, seeking guidance and support for his pantry. Shortly thereafter, Northbrook Chamber of Commerce Board Director Mark DeBartolo and Executive Director Kathi Quinn reached out to Nathan and his family, collaborating on a plan to place the first pantry outside the chamber office at 2002 Walters Ave. With the help of his grandfather, Tommy Rifkin, Nathan successfully constructed and installed the pantry in October.
The Legacy Pantry operates 24/7, offering essential items like cereal, canned goods and pasta to those in need. A sign affixed to the pantry reads, “Take what you need — Leave what you can.”
On Nov. 7, the Metzl family celebrated the pantry’s opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Attendees included U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, State Rep. Tracy Katz Muhl, Northfield Township Supervisor Shiva Mohsenzadeh, Northbrook Chamber Board Directors and representatives from the village of Northbrook and Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton’s office. Joining in the celebration were Nathan’s parents, grandparents, past teachers and family friends.
