Northbrook Senior Center invites community to free open house, register to receive gift

Walk into the Northbrook Senior Center on any given day, and you’ll see members enjoy themselves in a variety of ways, from discussing current events and learning about history to playing cards, taking low-impact fitness classes and getting CPR instruction.

Those who want to learn more about the plethora of activities available at the Senior Center for adults ages 55 and up are welcome to attend a free Open House on Nov. 8.

Longtime member Jan Brady, who has frequented the Senior Center for about 20 years, said it’s a special place that welcomes everyone.

“It’s very pleasant to be here,” said Brady, who leads the Crafters, Knitting and Crocheting group that meets on Monday mornings. The group makes assorted items — wine bottle covers, gift bags, adult bibs, tissue box covers and seasonal gifts — available for purchase, with all proceeds going to the Senior Center.

“Those who are in charge (of the Senior Center) are very nice and cooperative,” Brady added. “Anything we ask for, we have it by the next meeting.”

The Senior Center provides lots of opportunities to meet others and expand one’s social life, member Julie Goforth said. “I’ve made friends, and it’s just a nice place to gather and do various activities,” she said. “And all the staff are very congenial.”

The annual Open House is a great way for seniors and their families to check out the Senior Center and meet its staff members, said Northbrook Park District Recreation Manager Nancy Eschker.

“We love opening the doors of the Senior Center to welcome the community to our annual Open House,” Eschker said. “Our staff enjoys interacting with current and future members, showcasing all that we offer, and helping connect the community with vendors and service providers. Of course, everyone is welcome to stop by anytime to find out more about our classes and programs.”

The Senior Center Open House is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8.

Attendees can enjoy complimentary coffee, fruit and sweets. Attendance is free for anyone in the Northbrook community and beyond. Those who register in advance at nbparks.org/events/senior-center-open-house will receive a gift.

The event’s presenting sponsor is The Lodge of Northbrook, and the refreshment sponsor is Diane Barr — Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.

Gold sponsors are Amada Senior Care; Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Chicago — Steve Hara and Ellen Atlas — SRES; Bright Star Care North Suburban; CJE SeniorLife; ComForCare Home Care; Comfort Keepers; Home Instead; Jeremy Lew and Associates, Inc.; North Shore Compassionate Care; Northbrook Bank & Trust; Pain Relief Institute; state Rep. Tracy Katz Muhl; and Whitehall of Deerfield.

The annual membership fee for the Senior Center is $30 for Northbrook Park District residents and $45 for nonresidents.
