Mount Prospect Community Band Fall Concert Nov. 10

The Mount Prospect Park District proudly presents the Mount Prospect Community Band in its fall concert,” In the Presence of Heroes: A Military Tribute” at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. This fine wind ensemble has been performing in the area since its founding in 1976, and has toured in England and performed in Sèvres, France, the Sister City of Mount Prospect.

Music Director Monty Adams has prepared a program to honor our heroes (veterans, current military, police, firefighters, and all first responders.) The concert opens with the piece by James Swearingen that inspired the concert title, a wonderful and moving tribute to our everyday heroes. A lush heroic theme is interwoven throughout the piece that will undoubtedly be remembered long after the concert. Following that is the march “Cavalry of the Clouds” composed by the “British March King” Kenneth J. Alford, who also wrote the famous march “Colonel Bogey.”

Our guest trombone soloist is Thomas Stark, performing Rimsky-Korsakov's “Concerto for Trombone and Military Band.” Stark is principal trombonist with the Northwest Indiana Symphony, New Philharmonic, Elmhurst Symphony, and the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He is currently on the faculty of Elmhurst University, Concordia University, Harper College and the Birch Creek Music Performance Center.

“Aerial Fantasy” is another exciting piece inspired by the thrill and exhilaration of flight. This Pulitzer Prize-nominated work delivers a composition bursting with chills, breathtaking excitement and a full-blown hair-raising climax. Experience the thrill and exhilaration of flight with this epic piece commissioned by The United States Air Force Band. Following that is the audience favorite Salute to Armed Forces which is updated this year to include the Space Force.

For Broadway enthusiasts, the band will conclude with selections from the well-known musical “South Pacific,” composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

The Mount Prospect Community Band concert, “In the Presence of Heroes: A Military Tribute” will be performed on Nov. 10 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 W. Golf Road, Mount Prospect. Admission is $5 at the door.
