Gary UMC in Wheaton to offer class Oct. 20 to honor Indigenous people

This Sunday, Oct. 20, Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton is offering the class, “Where is the Holy Land?”

This will be an exploration of the spiritual significance of land for Native Americans. According to Cherokee scholar Dr. Alan Ray, Indigenous peoples have a “land based spirituality.” What does it mean for people to live and worship in their sacred space?

Gene Green will lead the discussion at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. This is part of the church’s monthlong focus, “Seeing and Celebrating: Honoring Indigenous Cultures Through Listening, Reflection and Dance.”

Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St. in Wheaton, has celebrated deep roots in the community since 1853.
