Lake Park film society to show Cary Grant classic ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

Fans have voted for this year's Halloween themed film!

Lake Park High School's Film Appreciation Society hosts its next screening on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The featured film is the 1944 screwball comedy/crime thriller “Arsenic and Old Lace,” directed by Frank Capra.

Admission to this community event is free. The film starts at 7 p.m. in the Lake Park High School West Campus Auditorium, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Roselle.

The setting of the film is Halloween day, when Cary Grant (as newlywed Mortimer Brewster) makes the grisly discovery that dear, old Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha are serial killers.

Rounding out the cast are Priscilla Lane as new bride Elaine Harper, and Josephine Hull and Jean Adair as the lovable but murderous spinster aunts.

The madcap madness does not end there; however, as other branches of the family tree appear to be a bit twisted.

Additional notable cast members include Edward Everett Horton, Raymond Massey and Peter Lorre. The run time of the film is 1 hour, 58 minutes.

Community film buffs are invited to attend the cinematic presentation and stay for an in-depth panel discussion regarding the background and history of the featured film.

Patrons also will be able to cast their votes for the selection of a political-themed film at the next screening on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The choices include:

• “A Face In The Crowd,” Elia Kazan’s 1957 satirical drama starring Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau;

• “The Manchurian Candidate,” John Frankenheimer’s 1962 Cold War psychological thriller starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury and Janet Leigh

• “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” Frank Capra’s 1939 classic starring Jimmy Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains and Edward Arnold

The Lake Park Film Appreciation Society aims to engage the community in the presentation, exploration, interpretation, and critical discussion of classic cinema.
