Gary UMC in Wheaton to honor Indigenous cultures

Throughout October, Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St. in Wheaton, will learn about Indigenous peoples’ history and culture with opportunities for all ages.

“Seeing and Celebrating: Honoring Indigenous Cultures Through Listening, Reflection and Dance” is a collaboration of the church’s Christian Education ministry and “Educate A Girl/Change the World” mission.

From Sunday school for kids, youth and adults to experiencing music and dance, the church has events scheduled throughout October.

On Oct. 6-27, there will be kids’ church mission study with “Creator Sang a Welcoming Song.” The adult Christian education series on Sundays, Oct. 13 and 20, will be on “Seeing & Celebrating.” The middle school and high school youth study will be on “Indigenous People We Need to Know.”

Also on Oct. 13, the Midwest SOARRING Foundation is hosting the Harvest Pow Wow at 12:30 p.m. at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton.

On Sunday, Oct. 27, the “Moment in Mission” will feature “Welcome Dr. Doreen Wiese, A Leader for a New Chicago” during the 9 a.m. worship.

An all-church special event will feature the Black Hawk Performance Company at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27.

The church celebrates deep roots in the community since 1853. Gary Church has vibrant music, kids, youth and adult ministries, plus opportunities for local, national and global missions. Gary Church offers worship at 9 and 11:11 a.m. In-between services, there’s Sunday school for all ages, a coffee fellowship hour, plus the chapel is available for prayer and reflection.
