Lake Park Film Appreciation Society series opens with ‘King Kong’ classic Sept. 18

Returning for the third consecutive year and growing in the number of films offered, Lake Park High School's Film Appreciation Society will kick off the 2024-25 school year on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The new season debuts with the original 1933 classic “King Kong” at 7 p.m. in the West Campus auditorium, 500 W. Bryn Mawr in Roselle. The free event is open to the community.

The film showcases groundbreaking special effects by the stop-motion animation pioneer Willis H. O'Brien and culminates in one of the most iconic climactic scenes in film history.

The pre-Code adventure film features Fay Wray, one of the original “scream queens,” as well as Robert Armstrong and Bruce Cabot.

The 100-minute film was directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack with music by Max Steiner, one of the classic Hollywood composers.

Community film buffs are invited to attend the cinematic presentation and stay for an in-depth panel discussion regarding the background and history of the featured film.

Patrons also will be able to cast their votes for the film selections of future Lake Park Film Appreciation Society presentations.

Mark your calendar for upcoming dates this semester and a new format — movie themes! On Oct. 16, the movie will have a Halloween theme, and on Nov. 6, it will be a political theme.
