Pekin spoils Gould’s coaching debut at Rolling Meadows

Robbie Gould’s head coaching debut got swallowed up by the Dragons Friday.

The former Chicago Bears kicker, who took over the head coaching duties at Rolling Meadows, watched his team fall into a deep pit, only to rally before losing to host Pekin 28-14.

The Dragons jumped to a 21-0 lead before Meadows reached back and mounted a comeback.

Shea Wells had a 9-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Wells then caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Joe Brigham to close within 21-14 with 5:13 to play.

Meadows had an opportunity to get even. But the Mustangs got stopped a fourth-and-2 play at the Pekin 39-yard line. The Dragons then followed with a touchdown to put the game away.

Libertyville 43, Lemont 0: Quinn Schambow threw five touchdown passes as the Wildcats won easily. Schambow threw a pair of touchdowns each to Stevan Gavric that covered 99 and 4 yards and to Blaise Lavista for 31 and 22 yards. Sam Seth scored on a 9-yard screen pass and ran for a two-point conversion. Gavin Dickson got the scoring started with a 6-yard run.

Schaumburg 12, Antioch 7: Schaumburg broke a 10-year opening game losing streak in Antioch. Ray Black had a 14-yard touchdown run with just over 10 minutes to play to lift the Saxons. Antioch took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a touchdown run by Roddie Rathman. Schaumburg closed to 7-6 on the ensuing possession on a 10-yard run by Vincent Haydecker, who had 13 carries for 72 yards.

St. Viator 62, Riverside University/Meir, WI 0: The Lions rolled North of the border. Cooper Kmet tossed five touchdown passes. Sasha Summers and Dayvion Ellis each caught a pair while Jaylan Szlachetka hauled in another. Damacio Ortegon had a punt return touchdown while Joey Lampignano and Jackson Sperling each had rushing touchdowns. And on kickoff, Colton Schneider forced a fumble which bounced back into the end zone, and Anthony Woodard recovered it for a touchdown.

Stevenson 52 at Bradford/Reuther, WI 14: Aidan Crawley threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots rolled in Wisconsin. Crawley threw an 18-yard TD pass to Zachary Becker (3 catches, 73 yards). Crawley also had an 11-yard touchdown run while Frank Costabile rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Maine East 34, East Aurora 6: Jay Bibbs picked up his first varsity win as Maine East dominated in its opener. Allen Vulic had 23 carries for 122 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Blue Demons. Salam Aro had 7 catches for 66 yards and two-point conversion. Tryfon Giolas was 14-0f-19 passing for 105 yards. He also rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Okiki Olurotimi had 11 tackles while Victor Nitchev had 8 tackles.

Carmel 63, Grayslake Central 13: Tre Taylor threw a pair of touchdown passes and led the Corsairs to 495 yards of total offense as they built a 49-0 lead just before halftime. Taylor threw touchdown passes of 32 yards to Larry Wilder and 25 yards to Michael Pierre, who also had a 73-yard touchdown run. Donovan Day had a 98-yard kickoff return. Grayslake Central’s Braden Carlson threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Eric Brum. Carlson also had a 70-yard touchdown run.

Grayslake North 35, Vernon Hills 14: Cameron Bates had a pair of rushing touchdowns as Grayslake North pulled away for the victory. Giuseppe Urso and Yack Gutkowski each had touchdown runs for Vernon Hills.

Wauconda 44, Hinsdale South 34: Jackson Rudolph scored four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Rudolh had touchdown runs of 4,18, 4 and 13 yards while also adding a conversion run. Logan Olson threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Luke Sickmeir. Olson also had a 29-yard touchdown run while Rocco Garcia kicked a 31-yard field goal.

Leyden 30, Highland Park 27: Maddox Jasisinski’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Chris Quizphi with 2:10 to play gave Leyden its first opening game victory in six years. Jasinski threw an earlier touchdown pass and the Eagles got touchdown runs from Dominic Ganir and Lucas Lattiker.

Lake Forest 35, Lakes 12: Lake Forest jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and Lakes could not recover.

North Chicago 32, Wheeling 0: North Chicago, which lost last year’s opener to Wheeling, turned the tables on the Wildcats.

West Chicago 42, Round Lake 0: Round Lake was blanked in their trip to West Chicago.
