Officials: Addison resident ticketed after dogs attack mail carrier

An Addison resident has been cited for letting dogs run loose after they bit a mail carrier on July 30.

Police have declined to release the name of the pet owner because the case is still under investigation by DuPage County Animal Services.

The attack happened around 4 p.m. on the 300 block of Winthrop Avenue, Addison Deputy Police Chief Jose Gonzalez said Wednesday.

The dogs bit the mail carrier on the face and torso; he was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, police said.

The owner also was cited for failing to vaccinate the dogs for rabies.

County officials ordered the dogs to be quarantined in their home while it determined whether they were rabid.

Gonzalez did not know the dogs’ breeds. He also did not have information about whether the owner contested the citations or accepted them and paid the fines. A person can be fined $25 to $250 for violations.

The U.S. Postal Service says that, in 2023, dogs were responsible for more than 5,800 attacks on mail carriers.
