Teen runner completes epic 64-mile journey from Chicago to Woodstock for Lurie Children’s

In a testament to personal endurance and community solidarity, 18-year-old Andy Loh, a recent graduate of Hersey High School, completed a 64-mile ultramarathon from downtown Chicago to Woodstock, in a bid to raise funds for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Known as the “High 55!” fundraiser, the run began as a bold idea sparked by a casual gaze of a map of Chicago. After months of planning and training, Andy set out to transform this ambitious concept into reality. Starting at the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago and ending in the serene town of Woodstock, Andy’s journey, which was originally planned to cover 55 miles, extended beyond the initial goal, reflecting Andy’s dedication to the cause.

The High 55! fundraiser invited supporters to pledge donations based on the distance covered, with the goal of raising $1,000 for Lurie Children’s. As of the latest update, donations have reached 84% of the target, which Andy hopes to surpass this amount and achieve even greater heights.

With a GoPro in one hand and a water bottle in the other, Andy traversed a diverse range of Chicago neighborhoods and suburban communities, showcasing the rich culture and unique features of each area.

While the run highlighted Andy’s efforts to complete an ultramarathon, he was not alone in this adventure. A film documenting the highs and lows of his run was released on YouTube, showcasing the profound sense of community that supported him. From meticulous preparation with his family to the supply drops from his friends, a lot of individuals behind the scenes helped make the High 55! possible.

Even getting to the starting line was extraordinary in itself. Riddled with injuries and slumps in the past, Andy has his coaches, family, but most significantly, his faith to thank for getting him through these challenges.

"My practice of Buddhism helped me navigate through dark times and understand the principles of cause and effect," he said. "This spiritual insight offered me the resilience, wisdom and compassion needed to complete this journey."

Andy believes his story is reminiscent of many.

"People aren’t defined by their struggles, but how they find the grips to overcome them in their darkest hours," Andy remarked in a promotional video.

“I wanted to show that anyone can make a significant difference in his or her community,” said Andy. “I’m a pretty average kid who loves running and wants to give back to my community. If my journey inspires even a few people to get involved or contribute, then it’s all worth it.”

The funds raised through The High 55! will directly benefit Lurie Children’s, a beacon of care for children and families throughout Chicago. The event’s success is a message of faith and resilience that Andy hopes to convey through this extraordinary effort.
