Police: Multiple vehicles broken into in Cary, one stolen

Cary officials say at least five people are responsible for a spate of vehicle burglaries early Sunday morning that saw items taken from 10 vehicles and one vehicle stolen.

The Cary Police Department was first alerted to the burglaries at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday when a resident on the 300 block of Oriole Trail reported that a subject tried to open the doors to their vehicle parked in the driveway about 45 minutes earlier. The attempt was captured on a home security camera.

Over the next several hours, officers were alerted to multiple additional vehicle burglaries in the same general area. Items stolen included purses, money, debit and credit cards, and, in one instance, two handguns.

In most cases, the vehicles were left unlocked, but one locked vehicle’s window was broken to gain access. The thefts occurred in an area encompassed by First Street on the east, Silver Lake Road on the west, Three Oaks Road on the north and Park Avenue on the south.

An abandoned vehicle found later that morning in a neighboring jurisdiction belonged to a Cary resident who did not yet know that their car had been stolen. Officials say the vehicle was stolen during the same window of time and believe it was used during the crime spree before being abandoned.

Later that morning, the offenders tried to use a stolen debit card at a gas station on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago.

Police say the suspects appear to be young adult or juvenile Black males. Several suspects had their faces covered, while one suspect did not.

Police ask anyone with information to call the Cary Police Department Investigations Section at (847) 639-2341. They also remind residents to lock their vehicle doors and keep valuables out of sight.
