A 19-year-old man held in the shooting death of a 15-year-old Round Lake Beach girl killed by a stray bullet inside her home on July 24 has been charged with felony murder.
Shorbonia Poole Jr., 19, of Round Lake Beach, also is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in the death of Valeria Rodriguez, according to the Lake County state’s attorney’s office.
Authorities said an arrest warrant was drafted and additional details were presented to a Lake County judge who signed the warrant. Poole was expected to appear in court Monday afternoon on the new charges, authorities said.
Poole initially was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon after police found a semiautomatic pistol and other evidence during a search of his home, according to the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
Rodriguez, an incoming sophomore at Round Lake High School, was sitting at a dining table in her home at about 9 p.m. when she was struck by a bullet fired from outside, authorities said. Rodriguez died from a gunshot wound to the torso, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.
Victim specialists have been working with the family since the shooting, authorities said.
