Emergency sewer project set to begin near Wheaton school

A storm sewer pipe near Emerson Elementary School in Wheaton will undergo emergency repairs.

City crews will replace roughly 850 feet of sewer pipe along Woodlawn Street between Liberty Drive and Childs Street. Work is slated to begin the week of July 29.

Officials had planned to replace the pipe next year, but a collapse of a portion of the pipe “requires prompt action,” according to a city alert.

The city expects the work will be completed by the end of August. Crews are coordinating work with the Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 schedule to minimize the impact on Emerson Elementary once students are back in school.

Traffic will remain open for school drop-off and pickup with lane limitations and flaggers directing cars throughout the day. Parking on the west side of the school also will be limited during construction hours.
