Route 31 closure in Geneva extended

The closure of the Route 31 underpass in Geneva has been extended to at least Aug. 5.

The Union Pacific railroad has had conflicts with utilities being moved as part of its Third Main Line project. Because of this, the shutdown of the at-grade crossings at Third Street and Western Avenue have been delayed.

The railroad envisions starting on Third in late summer or early fall. It doesn’t have a date for the Western closure.

The railroad is building a third railroad line from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago.
