Vernon Hills mother shares Mother’s Day advice
Mother’s Day was just this past Sunday, a special time of year for mothers of all ages. Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes strives to make it a point to celebrate and spotlight all of the incredible mothers that reside at the senior living community.
Naomi Peters, a resident of Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes, has three children, one step-child, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After her first husband passed away in the line of duty, she remarried a man from Chicago who raised her kids as his own. During her career, she was instrumental to the founding and growth of the child welfare department in North Chicago.
Naomi was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha at Morgan College on Dec. 9, 1949. Since then, she has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service through AKA and her Lake County chapter, Lamba Nu Omega. Her 75 years of service was recently honored when she was awarded the Diamond Soro Award at the regional conference in Chicago. This July, she will be recognized and honored again at the international conference in Dallas.
The best advice she received as a young mother? “Sleep when the baby sleeps.”
Her advice for young mothers? “Love that baby every moment you can because they’re only small once.”
